Where to go
Although this website concentrates on the spectacular Sierra Nevada mountain range, California is a large and diverse state and provides a wide choice of backpacking topographies including mountains, foothills, beaches, and desert.
Here are resources to help with your research on where to go:
- Wilderness Press - Outdoor Destinations California
Once again, Wilderness Press has the best collection of links to California governing agencies. (Note the handy section on Parks of the San Francisco Bay Area.)
- National Park Service - California
The National Park Services oversees nearly 400 natural, cultural, and recreational sites in the United States, including 30 in California.
- California State Parks - Find a Park
The California State Parks system oversees 270 park units in California, 15,000 campsites, and 3,000 miles of trails.
- USDA Forest Service - Pacific Southwest Region
The Pacific Southwest Region of the USDA Forest Service manages 20 million acres of National Forest land in California.
