The easy way
OK, there are other ways to visit the backcountry without actually backpacking. You can have an animal, such as a horse or burro, do the work. You don't actually even have to walk if you can ride a horse. You might be a bit more limited in your geographic wanderings, since you will need to pick an area with pack animals close by. The animals may not be as nimble as humans on the trail, either. But for some (especially those with small children) this is a great option, if not the only way to go. For others, it's the most comfortable way to go.

You can even rent a llama!
How about a boat ride?
You can shorten your hike significantly by taking a ferry boat ride across a High Sierra reservoir.
